Sunnyvale author publishes first novel - "September Snow"
A Sunnyvale native and 19-year Sunnyvale Public Library Specialist, Robert Balmanno, just released copies of his futuristic novel, September Snow, to book reviewers, friends and Sunnyvale neighbors in early August.
The book, Balmanno's first one to be published, touches on some of the most pressing environmental, political and social issues facing our world in the near future. Published by Regency Press of Oakland, it is the fruit of many years of writing, research and extensive reading, and is the first in a series of four books, the Blessings of Gaia quartet.
"I have the perfect job for a writer." Said Balmanno, "I'm surrounded by books at work." Many of his co-workers are thrilled about the long-awaited news of the publishing.
Balmanno was born and raised in Sunnyvale and attended St. Francis High School in Mountain View. He received his bachelor's degree in Political Science at U.C. Santa Barbara and did post-graduate work in Politics and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He also did post-graduate work at the University of London, King's College.
In the 1970s Balmanno traveled through Europe and Asia Minor, after a stint in the Peace Corps in a remote West African village, and returned to the United States to dedicate his life to writing works of contemporary fiction. He has seven full-length novel manuscripts to his credit, two of which are set in Silicon Valley. Balmanno is presently working on the second book of the Gaia series, Runes of Iona.
This first book has been a mixture of incredible highs and moments of utter frustration, said Balmanno, now finding himself on the learning curve of book marketing and promoting. Poised on the brink of his local promotional campaign, Balmanno is preparing for a series of appearances at local bookstores, and in the early stage of the game, is being well received by many local booksellers.
"I've had to put an extra hook on my wall." Quips Balmanno, "It's for my marketeer's hat-but soon, I'll have to put that writer's hat back on my head and get busy on that first sequel!"
